    Researcher Profile

Dr. Nyambura Mwangi is a plant nematologist dedicated to understanding plant–nematode interactions and delivering sustainable, field-ready crop protection strategies. Her work focuses on cultural control, especially the use of cover crops and rotations—to manage plant-parasitic nematodes such as stubby root nematodes (Trichodorus and Paratrichodorus spp.) and potato cyst nematodes (Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida). Nyambura investigates the phytochemicals produced by these crops (e.g., Brassicaceae-derived isothiocyanates), translating them into integrated nematode management strategies through biofumigation and allelopathic approaches of creating suppressive soils. She also studies grass–endophyte symbioses and their associated alkaloids to suppress soil-dwelling nematodes, while evaluating how these strategies improve soil health and enhance soil biodiversity.

Her research interests align with the goals of resilient, low-input agriculture—reducing reliance on synthetic nematicides, improving yields, and supporting the spirit of UN SDG 2 on food security and sustainable agriculture.
